How to store medicines safely in the home with our medicine storage box
Most families have to store medicines within the home, whether this is Calpol or prescription medicine, the need for safe storing is essential. This need is amplified when caring for an elderly relative who is prone to forgetting and taking too much of their medicine, or when you have a curious toddler who likes to rummage through the cupboards. A lockable pill box can help keep your worries at bay and bring peace of mind to the whole family that hazardous items are safely stored within our medicine box.
Many medications offer serious risk if others are exposed to them, this is especially a cause for concern if there are young children in the house. Every year around 60,000 children can be brought to an emergency room or hospital because of medication poisoning. To be safe, it is suggested that you should keep all your medicines – whether bought from a pharmacy, supermarket or prescribed – safely locked away in a medicine storage box or lockable pill box, such as the Lockabox One. Other products that you might not think of as medicines should also be kept out of the reach of children. These can include mouthwashes, skin creams and vitamins. All of these contain ingredients that could be dangerous if swallowed by accident.
So, what are our top tips for storing medicines safely within the home?*
- Keep all medicines/harmful chemicals in their original containers – do not transfer to another container such as a plastic bottle. Keeping all medicines in their original packaging, can also help you to know who it was prescribed for and when, instructions for use and the expiry date.
- Make sure bottle tops and lids are firmly closed when not in use (remember: that child-resistant packaging is not child-proof – it just slows children down. Scarily some 3-4-year-olds can open them in seconds.)
- Keep harmful substances locked away in a medicine storage box such as Lockabox (Lockabox One™ Jet). Ensure that bottle tops and lids are still firmly closed for an extra level of protection.
- Ensure harmful substances are kept out of reach – with a medicine box like Lockabox, we recommend placing the product on a high surface for an extra level of protection.
- Do not hoard medicines after you have finished with them. Many medicines ‘go off’ after a while and all packaging should contain an expiry date. Every so often, perhaps every three months, go through your medicine storage box and remove anything that is past its expiry date. Return these to the pharmacist for safe disposal.
